MINISTERS MESSAGE
Sometimes, it just seems too much to carry; the weather, the headlines, an argument with a family member, water in the basement, the price of eggs, the highs and lows of Kentucky basketball—the load of so many challenges weighs heavy on our hearts and minds. I have always fought the notion that things are worse today than in previous generations. A student of history can certainly find trial, tragedy, and tyranny throughout human history. In the moment, however, the burdens we carry can become a consuming force that clouds perspective and steals joy.
There are few quick fixes for these challenges, most requiring time, patience, and determined effort to overcome. There is for us, however, hope in the midst of heaviness found in the words of Jesus, who tells us,“Come to me, all you who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:28-29)
I cannot tell you when the price of eggs will come down, or when the snow and ice will finally be behind us. I cannot solve all the issues that bring division in relationships, and I definitely cannot fully explain the current Kentucky basketball team’s inconsistencies, but in the midst of all I don’t know, by faith, I trust life’s burdens and challenges to the One who invites me to rest in his welcoming arms and learn from his gentle and humble heart. Such grace enables us to experience peace in the storm, wisdom in uncertainty, and hope for the days to come.
Jim
