So, what now? Contemplating next steps is often difficult, whether one wins or loses. Life is a continuing series of victories and setbacks and much of our time and energy is devoted to how we respond to these changes. Even when things go the way we believe or hope they should, careful steps are necessary, particularly when others disagree with the outcome. The hubris of victory can easily overshadow one’s outlook, devaluing the concerns others have raised while being consumed by a singular perspective. For those whose dreams are dashed, there is the temptation to give in to that disappointment, finding it difficult to step forward into a new reality. How does one find his or her footing in the midst of these shifting narratives?
Our nation responds to the results of another presidential election. Though the final tallies aren’t complete, the path to victory for Donald Trump seems assured as multiple news outlets have now declared him the winner. Those numbers speak not only of candidates who won or lost, but also the continuing division of our nation. Some are claiming a divine mandate while others believe our democracy has been irrevocably wounded. The rhetoric and accusations of this presidential race have so captured minds and hearts that winning and losing have been portrayed as zero-sum outcomes that seem to overshadow the connections we have as citizens of this nation. Freedom allows for our differences, but the cost of that freedom calls us not to abandon a shared desire to do what is honorable and good.
My faith leads me to believe the rise and fall of political candidates and parties cannot rival the call to live and walk in the way of compassion, wisdom, and love set forth by Jesus. This is a higher calling than political partisanship. Unfortunately, the name of Jesus has been invoked many times in this election as endorsement for a particular candidate and this amalgamation of civil and religious identity has produced a witness that has turned hearts and minds away from the authentic Jesus.
So, I ask again, what now? The wise writer of the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes says there is a time for everything—to weep and to laugh, to be silent and to speak, to mourn and to dance. In the midst of it all, I trust that God is yet at work, not necessarily engineering particular outcomes, but being present among us, in our differences…even in our wins and losses.
….Jim Abernathy
