John 9:18-41

When reading John 9, the story of Jesus healing the blind beggar one word comes to mind and that is "Awakening." As we question occurrences in life that we cannot understand, the Pharisees did not believe that Jesus could heal this man. Because of strict Jewish law of not working on the way Sabbath Jesus had broken the law by healing the blind man. Therefore in their eyes he could not be "of God" or "the Messiah."

I have recently had an "Awakening" of my own. Last August I became physically weak, exhausted and dehydrated. Thinking that the summer heat was my problem I did not think so much about it. But when my vision started to fail I knew that I had a serious problem.

I went to my doctor and was diagnosed with diabetes. I must admit that I was frightened because there is no history of the disease in my family. Through medications, a strict diet, and prayer I with God's help was able to change my health. Then after five months my vision improved greatly and I had been "Awakened" to the benefits of healthier eating and exercise.

When the Pharisees questioned the blind man about Jesus' ability to heal, he responded "I do not know if Jesus is good or bad, but I was blind and now I can see."

Through Jesus' example we can learn about our faith being important to understand and that Jesus was the "Son of God."  He did have God's will to heal.  Jesus told the blind beggar, "I have come into the world to give sight to those who are spiritually blind, and to show those who think they see, that they are blind."

I pray that in this most holy season that we will all be "Awakened" to Jesus's gift if dying for our sins!
