The first time I read this passage, I
was really confused.What is Jesus
talking about?He is not making
sense.How am I a slave?I reread the passage a couple more
times.I was thinking just like the
"chosen people" Jesus was talking to.I realized Jesus is telling his audience that they can't believe his
word because his word is the truth. They
can't understand what he is teaching or accept him because they are not of the
truth, just like the devil is not of the truth.
Jesus is saying that those who love God,
can hear his message, understand it, and accept it.Those that are listening to the devil will
not hear the truth. They will not hear
Jesus. So we are either with God or against Him.
I don't know about you, but this makes
me a little uncomfortable.Why does
everything have to be either black or white? What about those grey areas that we put stuff in that we are not sure
about? How many of our decisions in
society today are a compromise and part of these grey areas? I think Jesus'
point is that there can be no grey areas. It's either truth--or not.
In John 14:6 Jesus says, "I am the
way, the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through me."
Trust Jesus to lead the way. Trust His truth, trust in His leadership and
His teachings. Trust that He is God that came to reconcile the world. If we are receivers of Jesus' words with an
open mind, we hear the word of God and will know "the truth"
