good-natured humor when Disciples of Christ congregations state that they are
more skilled at cooking and eating than quoting scripture. It’s a debatable point, but there is one
bible story we all know, Jesus cleansing the temple.Perhaps you too have quoted it as
justification for your anger?
the story contains a much bigger message. Jesus has come not to rebuild a
physical but a spiritual kingdom.God is
not in the temple but in Jesus and with His death and resurrection, God dwells
in His people.A hallowed temple is
unnecessary because everyone has potential to be "sacred”.
God becoming accessible through the resurrected Jesus
is a powerful and empowering message. This means that today’s believing community is the “place” where God
dwells.Every dimension of daily living
may become a place for encountering God.No wonder, then, that some Christians want to be very public about their
faith. As a community of believers, how public
is our God?
